The area is the economic core of the southern part of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. It also performs important trade and transit functions – one of the main roads connecting Poland with Slovakia, the so-called Via Carpatia, runs through it and in the vicinity, there are routes connecting Poland with Ukraine. In addition to the function of a county city, the city of Krosno also performs the functions of sub-regional importance – for the southern part of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship.

Characteristics of the Transport System:
- The transport system of Krosno’s FUA ensures equality and accessibility regardless of gender, age or physical ability of travellers
- Within the FUA there is a very large difference in access to the public transport system between cities and rural communes, and a very large variation in its quality (number of trips, communication, transport service on days off and festive holidays)
- Particularly visible are the differences in the level of transport accessibility between the centre of Krosno (very good accessibility), the peripheral areas of the city (medium or poor accessibility), and rural areas (poor or very poor accessibility)
- The transport system consists of urban bus transport, regional bus transport and rail transport
Needs of the Functional Area:
- Raising awareness and changing mobility behaviours
- Need to integrate different carriers (timetables, coordination)
- The need to reduce vehicle traffic and change the modal of travel
- The need to link the city with the expressway under construction
Institutional capacity assessment:
- Cooperation within the FUA was assessed as very good (long-term cooperation, the functional area has been operating for many years). The leader is the City Development and Investor Services Department, which has extensive experience in preparing strategic documents.
Interesting facts:
- Over the past years, Krosno has worked consistently to implement a strategy for an integrated public transportation system, including a new fleet of low-emission buses.
- Primarily known as a big glass-manufacturing centre, Krosno is critical pivot point because of its proximity to major routes leading to Slovakia and Hungary.
- Since 2021, Krosno joined four editions of the European Mobility Week.
