Characteristics of the Transport System:
- A railway line, a public transport system in Gniezno, several private carriers operating regional transport.
- Gniezno FUA transport system generally provides an adequate level of accessibility for all travellers (children, the elderly and people with reduced mobility) and the municipal company MPK Gniezno has all buses on low floors.
- Differences in the level of transport accessibility are particularly visible between the center of Gniezno (very good accessibility), peripheral areas of the city (average or poor accessibility) and rural areas in the Gniezno MOF (characterized by poor or very poor accessibility).
- There is a very large variation in the quality of transport services (number of rides, communication, transport service on days off and holidays, quality of rolling stock).
Needs of the Functional Area:
- Improving the accessibility of peripheral areas of Gniezno FUA;
- Increasing the frequency of public transport;
- Integration of various means of public transport through the construction of new transfer hubs in Gniezno and other FUA communes (rail, city bus, suburban bus);
- Introducing solutions towards tariff integration of various means of public transport, in particular among numerous private carriers;
- Development of low-emission transport in Gniezno by modernizing the MPK bus fleet in Gniezno.
Institutional capacity assessment:
- The Department of Urban Development and Economy of the Gniezno City Hall, coordinating the development of the SUMP, together with other organizational units, have relatively little experience in the preparation of strategic and planning documents, as well as in obtaining external funds – domestic and foreign.
- An additional challenge is the agreement between the individual municipalities necessary to develop a SUMP for the entire Functional Urban Area.
Interesting facts:
- Gniezno has participated in more than 15 editions of European Mobility Week, making it one of the most active and longest running campaign participants.
